If your child has dyslexia, he will never find spelling easy. That isn't to say that he shouldn't work at learning to spell, indeed he will have to work even harder than his peers, it is just to say that there is a time and a place to work on spelling. That time and place isn't while he is in the middle of creative writing. That time and place isn't when he is writing an essay in History. That time and place isn't when he writing up a Chemistry experiment. At all these times, he needs to put his mind to what he is writing, rather than how to spell it. So, allow your child free reign to use words that he can't spell. I know adults with dyslexia who have degrees from top universities, who can't spell well, and I never think the less of them when there are misspellings in their emails. Revisit my blog for ideas on how to help your child spell better in a later post but, for now, set him free to explore his ideas. People with dyslexia often make connections that others don't, and you are likely to be amazed at what he can achieve, so long as his wings aren't clipped by always worrying about spelling.
