Telling a child she's good at Maths should encourage her, right? Think again, especially if she is a child with features of Pathological Demand Anxiety. Telling her she's good at Maths puts an implicit demand on her: she has got to keep being good at Maths. Instead, praise her for her determination in solving a hard problem or for her perseverance when her workings didn't lead to the right answer. This way, she will free to keep working without worrying about whether her work is 'good' or not.
