The key is to spread the learning over several days. An hour of learning is more effective if split into six ten minute sessions than crammed in one go the day before the test. Cramming means that much of what is learned stays in the short term memory and is quickly lost. Spreading learning ensures that learning is transferred to the long term memory where it stays indefinitely. So, if your child has a spelling test every Friday, start the learning on Saturday and revisit little and often. The spellings will be remembered not just for the test but for all assignments going forward.
